The letter disclosed that America had a key role in shaping the 1988 India-Pakistan nuclear agreement and other regional diplomatic efforts.

BJP lawmaker Nishikant Dubey on Thursday attacked the Congress party by posting a declassified letter written by former US President Ronald Reagan to then PM Rajiv Gandhi.

The letter disclosed that America had a key role in shaping the 1988 India-Pakistan nuclear agreement and other regional diplomatic efforts.

Dubey challenged Congress's criticism of U.S. intervention in India-Pakistan relations and stated, "This letter establishes that the 1988 nuclear deal was concluded under American pressure, and talks with Soviet Russia on Afghanistan were conditioned under US agenda." He inquired if such external influence was in accordance with the spirit of the Shimla Agreement or with India's sovereignty.

The letter pointed to Reagan's concerns regarding nuclear rivalry in South Asia and his backing for peace initiatives, claiming that negotiations between Rajiv Gandhi and Pakistan's General Zia were focused on framing the agenda of nuclear negotiations.

Dubey also argued controversially that India's military deployment in Sri Lanka in the 1980s could have been due to US pressure, and he wrote, "Did we send the army to kill Tamil brothers only under American pressure?"

These comments are made as Congress renewed the attack on the Modi government's handling of foreign interference in India-Pakistan affairs and the suspension of Operation Sindoor.
